Chicco Lullaby LX Playard Review

Every parent with a newborn or a small toddler knows how difficult it can be taking them places because of the lack of sleeping space. For babys, sleeping on a regular mattress or a sofa using the pillows to cushion them can be very dangerous. The Chicco Lullaby LX Playard is a perfect solution that has everything you need for a short trip away from home, or to use as a secondary crib in your or a relatives home. It is geared for children up to 30 pounds in weight.

Chicco Baby Strollers

The Chico Lullaby LX Playard is a perfect play yard product for your child when it comes to nap time or playtime. It comes equipped with a changing table that is attached to the railing of the unit and that will support up to 25 pounds. It has plenty of storage space in the side pockets, perfect for keeping the necessities that you need for when it's time to change the babys diaper.

Chicco Baby Strollers

It has a thickly padded quilted washable mattress than can be removed quickly and easily, and a bassinet to meet the needs of smaller babies up to 15 lbs. The wheels make it easy to maneuver around, and it comes with electronics that feature music, vibration and a night light that are all managed by a remote control

For traveling, it has a push button folding mechanism that lets the unit folds down compactly and fits neatly into its own storage bag. This is the perfect solution if you are looking for a portable crib, or a secondary crib to leave at the grandparents house that can opened and closed in a jiffy so as not to take up unnecessary space when not in use. The Chicco is also probably the best looking (in my opinion) of all the different portable babys play yards models. Of course beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but believe me, this is a good looker when it comes to play yards.

Infant Car Seats That Provide Safety First

Safety is the first rule when traveling with young infants and children. That's always the rule that parents have with their babies especially while traveling in a vehicle. With so many road accidents around the world, road safety has become quite a cause for concern. More and more people now take precautionary measures over the safety of their families while on the road especially infants and children to ensure that they reach their destinations safe and sound.

Chicco Baby Strollers

Infant car seats are not just popular in some countries; they are a safety requirement. Infants and children cannot travel in a car if they are not sitting in their specially designed seats. Many countries do not let parents take their newborn out of the hospital unless they demonstrate that they have a car seat for the baby installed in the vehicle that will drive them away. Some people consider these seats a hassle and an added expense, but the fact of the matter is that infant car seats can be a life saver and should be used when traveling in a car.

Chicco Baby Strollers

There are several different types of infant car seats, and the United Nations has standardized these in four groups:

1. Group 0+ 2. Group 1 3. Group 2 4. Group 3

1. Group 0+: These car seats are designed for infants up to the age of three months. These are infant carriers that are secured to the back seat of a vehicle with a standard seat belt and keep the baby in a rear facing position. These seats are designed so that once the ride is over, you can simple unhook the seat belt and carry the seat out, baby and all.

2. Group 1: This designation consists of seats that are a permanent fixture in the back seat of a car and has the seat belt as a reinforcement to hold it in place. This is recommended for infants between 20lb and 40lb and the recommendation provided by the authorities is to make sure that the infant sits rear facing for as long as possible for security reasons.

3. Group 2: These are detachable seats which are held in place by seat belts and are used for children ranging between 33lb and 55lb.

4. Group 3: These are also known as booster seats and are held in place with seat belts. These are primarily for children between 48lb to 76lb and are front facing seats.

There are many manufacturers of seats designed for the safety of your child filling markets all over the world. It is very important to understand that the quality is a major consideration when buying a car seat as you will be buying something that may be a life saving product one day.

There are three kinds of forward facing car seats that you can take advantage of:

1. Infant-Child Seat: This can be used for both forward and rear facing positions depending on the age and size of your child.

2. Child-Booster Seat: This can be used as a forward facing seat and also as a high back booster seat. This is especially good if your child is tall or if you want to use it for a longer period of time.

3. Built-in Car Seats: This is an option that some car manufacturers offer. These are built into the car's back seat and come with their own harness.

Some of the popular companies that manufacture infant car seats include Graco, Kolcraft, Jeep, Mothercare, Chicco, Fisher Price, Mama Love, Britax, Giggle Baby, Kidco, Peg Perego, Quinny, Recaro and Colgate. Whichever car seat that you decide to buy, you must make sure that it comes with its own 5-point safety harness to keep the child in place and has enough space for your child to sit comfortably.

The best advice is to always check with your local law regulations as to the specific seat requirements for your area or state. They may differ quite a bit. There is a lot of information online regarding car seats for children and infants, and some readers may not be familiar with how to do research online when considering what type of product to buy.

Graco Pack N Play

We absolutely love our Graco Pack N Play! I would have to say it is the one piece of baby equipment which we probably use the most out of all the different things we bought when our son was born. We put it up initially in our family room since that is the one room of the house that we use the most. It sits in the corner of the room and doesn't take up that much space. I love that it has a changing table attached to it so that when we have to change our baby's diaper we don't have to run upstairs to his nursery to do so. In addition to the changing table, it also has a sleeping area so that our little guy can take a nap if he gets sleepy during the day. I find that to be so convenient.

Chicco Baby Strollers

Our Graco Pack N Play is a neutral plaid pattern which is definitely suitable for a boy or a girl. We chose that design so that if we do have a daughter in the future, we wouldn't have to buy a new one, we could instead just re-use the old one. It has a nice three-pocket side organizer next to the changing table which is perfect to hold diapers, diaper cream and wipes. And above the sleep area it has a mobile which can actually be repositioned to any side of the crib you'd like. It is easy to fold away and travels nicely. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that the mattress it comes with is very thin. There is a playard mattress which is sold separately and we decided to purchase one to make it more comfortable for our kids.

Chicco Baby Strollers

I highly recommend the Graco Pack N Play to any parents expecting a new baby. Each year they come out with new models and incredible features which would make any little one a very happy customer.

Consumer Reports: High Chairs

You'll want a stable, sturdy model that can stand up to spilling, kicking, and regular cleaning for at least a year (some babies can't bear to sit in a high chair after that). A chair with a tray that can be released with one hand is also a plus. Picture your baby occupying your other arm while you're opening and closing the tray; it's just one of the many physical feats you'll be asked to master as a parent.

Chicco Baby Strollers

A high chair usually consists of a frame of molded plastic or metal tubing and an attached seat with a safety belt and a footrest. There are still a few old-fashioned wooden high chairs out there with a removable tray or arms that lift the tray over a baby's head, although they aren't always as comfortable for babies as the modern, form-fitting models on the market now, and most of them aren't certified as meeting the latest safety standards. You'll also find a few hybrid units, which can double as a swing or convert into other types of gear, such as a chair for an older child or a play table.

Chicco Baby Strollers

SHOPPING SECRETS

Look for a chair that has a waist strap and a strap that runs between the legs. If a tray is used, there should be a passive restraint, such as a crotch post, used in conjunction with the harness straps. A high chair, like a car seat or a stroller, is one of those shake-rattle-and-roll buying experiences. We suggest visiting the baby store near you with the broadest selection. Then do the following:

Open and close the fastener on the seat's safety harness (try it one-handed) to make sure it's easy to use. If it's not, you might be tempted not to use it every time your child is in the seat, although that's imperative.

Adjust the seat height to see how well that mechanism works. Some seats come with as many as seven possible heights. You may only use one or two, but you can't know for sure at this point.

Assess the seat cover. Look for a chair with upholstery made to last. It should feel substantial, not flimsy. Make sure upholstery seams won't scratch your baby's legs.

Make sure wheels can be locked (if you're buying a model with wheels) or that they become immobilized when there is weight (like a baby) in the seat.

Watch out for rough edges. Examine the underside of the feeding tray to make sure it's free of anything sharp that could scratch your baby. Also look for small holes or hinges that could capture little fingers.

Check for the absence of small parts. Make sure the caps or plugs that cover the ends of metal tubing are well secured. Parts small enough for a child to swallow or inhale are a choking hazard. Know when to fold 'em. If you plan to fold up your high chair as often as every day, practice in the store. Some chairs that claim to be foldable can have stiff folding mechanisms. Technically they may be foldable, but they're not user-friendly.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

Major brands of high chairs include, in alphabetical order: Baby Trend, Chicco USA, Dorel Juvenile Group (Cosco), Evenflo, Fisher-Price, Graco, J. Mason, Kolcraft, Peg Perego, and Scandinavian Child. There are three general price ranges:

Basic high chairs

High chairs at this end of the price range (under ) are simple, compact, and generally work quite well. Essentially plastic seats on plastic or steel-tubing legs, such models may or may not have tray and height adjustments and tend to lack bells and whistles, such as wheels, foldability for storage, one-handed tray removal, or the capacity to recline, which you may not use anyway unless you're bottle-feeding. The seat is usually upholstered with a vinyl covering or bare plastic, and the pad may be removable and washable. The tray is typically kept in place with pins that fit into holes in the tubing.

Pros: For the money, a basic high chair can serve you and your baby well. But it pays to comparison shop, as some brands may be more suitable to your needs than others.

Cons: Watch for chairs in this price range with grooves in the seat's molded plastic (a gunk trap); cotton seat pads rather than vinyl, which tend not to hold up as well over time; and trays with side release buttons that are accessible to your baby. Some parents report that their babies can remove such trays--food and all--as early as 9 months of age.

Midpriced high chairs

In this price range ( to 0), you'll find many of the features of higher-end chairs, which include multiple tray and chair-height positions; casters for mobility, with a locking feature for safe parking; a reclining seat for infant feeding; one-hand removable tray; foldability for storage; and a three- or five-point harness plus a passive restraint when used with the tray. Most have cushioned, vinyl seat pads that can be removed for washing, although you'll also still see models with cloth covers in this price range; those are a challenge to keep clean. Frames and seats are typically made of molded, rigid plastic or steel.

Pros: This price range generally offers sturdier chairs with more usable features, although, depending on the model, price isn't always aligned with quality.

Cons: Some models are bulky and can eat up space in a small kitchen, although a large footprint provides greater stability. Just watch out that you don't trip on the protruding legs.

High-end high chairs

In this price range (0 and up), you'll find European imports and traditional solid-wood high chairs. Chairs at this end of the market tend to have thick, tubular frames topped by densely padded seats upholstered in vinyl. As a result, they may have a more solid feel and cushier digs for baby. Some models come with add-on fabric covers that are removable for laundering. These chairs can be adjusted to many different heights and reclining positions with a simple squeeze-release mechanism. Some have folding "A"-shaped frames to make them easy to store.

Pros: You'll get extra features, such as seven height positions instead of five, and often better quality, which is important to consider if you want the chair to last through another baby or more. Another bonus: Many parents report that companies that sell higher-end chairs tend to have responsive customer service, which helps if you have a problem.

Cons: Chairs in this range can be bulky because they tend to have a wider base for stability. That's good because it reduces the risk of tipping. However, you'll need more space to accommodate the footprint, which tends to be more like that of a baby swing.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Crotch post. To help prevent a baby from slipping out under the tray and getting his or her head caught, high chairs now typically have a center crotch post attached to the tray or to the seat. It's not meant to replace the safety belt, though. A center post that attaches to the chair rather than to the tray is better because it enables you to push your child up to the table without the tray but still have that center-post support.

Foldability. Some high chairs fold for storage. If that's important to you, make sure there's a secure locking system to prevent accidental folding while your child is in the chair or being put into it. Such a system should automatically engage when you open the chair.

Safety belt. As we mentioned, this is an important feature. When buying a high chair, examine the restraining straps to make sure the waist belt has a buckle that can't be fastened unless the crotch strap is also used. Safety belts should hold your baby securely in place, with no leeway for standing up or climbing out. Some high chairs offer an adjustable three-point harness--two adjustable shoulder straps and a lock between the child's legs--or an adjustable five-point harness--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap, which is ideal.

Seat adjustment. Seats can move up or down to as many as seven height positions on some chairs. They may also recline (in case your baby falls asleep right after eating). However, except for bottle feeding, don't use a seat in the reclining position while feeding your baby--that's a choking hazard. With a height-adjusting chair, the seat slides along the chair frame, locking into various positions. Height options range from nearly floor level to standard high-chair level, with the middle height low enough to allow the seat (with the tray removed) to be pushed up to a dining-room table.

Toys. Some high chairs have toys that attach to the tray, an option your baby will likely enjoy, although you can certainly buy toys separately that fasten to high-chair trays. But avoid strings when attaching them.

Tray. In general, you'll want a lightweight tray you can take off with one hand or that swings to the side when not in use. Certain designs help contain spills: a tray that surrounds baby on all sides, a tray angle that channels liquids away from baby, or a tall rim all around the tray. Some chairs have two trays: a big tray with a deep rim for feeding and a smaller one for snacking or playing. Don't be lured by a claim that the tray is "dishwasher safe"--most trays are too large to fit in a dishwasher.

Upholstery. Many models have seat coverings--or entire seat panels--that come off for easier cleaning. Be sure fasteners won't cause upholstery to tear as you pull off the seat or coverings. Opt for a seat cover with a pattern rather than a solid color; patterns are better at concealing spills. Some covers look like cloth but are really vinyl, which is easier to spot clean than cloth.

Wheels. Wheels may make it easier to move the high chair around, which is important if you'll frequently be hauling your high chair from, say, the kitchen to the dining room. On the other hand, wheels can also be a nuisance because they may allow the chair to move as you're trying to pull a tray off, or as you put your baby in. Older children may be tempted to take the baby for a joyride when you turn your back. Wheels on some models appear to make the chair less stable. If you decide on a wheeled model, look for locks on the wheels, preferably on all four. Some models come with locking casters. Still others have just two wheels and stay in place unless you tilt them on their wheels for rolling around.

RECOMMENDATIONS

There are pluses and minuses with every price range of chair. All can be tough to clean because, let's face it, baby food has a way of getting into every possible nook and cranny (and most seats have them somewhere). High-end models offer flexible positioning, extra-thick seat padding, and attractive upholstery.

Mid priced models generally represent the best value. And, like high-end models, they usually have an easy-to-remove tray, a sturdy safety belt, a tip-resistant frame, and a crotch post. But even some basic chairs can compete with higher-end models in terms of safety and other features. No matter what your budget, buy a chair of recent production that's certified so you can be sure it meets the current voluntary safety standard.

Secrets of a Veteran Traveler For Successful and Easy Plane Travel With Small Child(ren)

For the past 13 years I've been traveling between the US and Europe on a regular basis. Since my son was born, he's been going with me almost every time. On some trips my husband was with us to help, but on many more I was alone to take care of my now-8-year-old son on the nine-hour flights...

Chicco Baby Strollers

As an organizing and time management expert, I took advantage of those trips to accumulate a wealth of tips and strategies to make every plane trip a smooth and successful one every time. Here are some of them. May they save you some of the less-than-pleasant learning experiences I went through:

Chicco Baby Strollers

Separate seat or no separate seat, that is the question.

The first decision that needs to be made for all children under 2 years of age is whether you want them on your lap or in their own seat. As long as your child is small enough, there is no need for a separate seat, since many airlines can give you an in-plane bassinet. The airlines don't exactly advertise the fact, but if you call the airline - and you may have to do this yourself, they sometimes won't accept this kind of request from a travel agency - you can request a bassinet for the flight. You will then be assigned a bulkhead row seat, with a bassinet hooked on the wall in front of you. The bassinet was big enough for my 10-month old to still fit in. The hidden advantage of requesting a bassinet is that the bulkhead seat gives you a built-in play area in front of you for your baby to play, and invaluable advantage.

Once your baby outgrows the bassinet, the choice of a separate seat is much more of an open question. My personal choice was to have a second seat if I was traveling alone with my son, and to have him sit in our respective laps when we traveled with my husband. It worked well for us, but you may make a different choice. From my experience, there is no right answer at this point. Of course, past 2 years of age, this question becomes a moot point, since airlines will force you to get a separate seat for your child.

The car seat issue

The next big question, once you've chosen your seat option, is whether to take a car seat with you on the plane or not. If your child has his or her own seat and is less than 2 years old, FAA regulations force you to have one.

Beyond 2 years old, you are faced with a choice where both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Taking your car seat with you makes your life easier, because you know how to install it, and your child is used to it. However, a car seat is a very bulky item. If you're traveling alone with your little one - or worse, with several little ones - it's almost impossible to juggle a car seat, a stroller, your carry-on an wiggly little one(s). Trust me, I've tried...

Some other things to take into consideration: your car seat, even if FAA approved, may not fit in a standard coach seat. It might also be perfectly useless at your destination if it can't be installed using a standard car seat belt - not all countries have adopted the LATCH system, or they may have their own version of it. My choice has always been to get a car seat at my destination rather than travel with one.

The stroller

When you are traveling by plane, a sturdy, umbrella-style stroller is by far the best type of stroller to have. The lighter it is, the better, yet you want it to be sturdy: you don't want it to break at the first opportunity, and you want it to be able to easily negotiate uneven streets and sidewalks, or even a dirt path, yet you don't want to be heartbroken should it get stolen (yes, it happens, and happened to me). I found the Chicco umbrella strollers to be a great, affordable solution, and one of them, the Liteway, even fits infants from birth on! We bought one and it's resisted everything we put it through - we still have it in case a little one visits our home.

Should you choose to take both a car seat and a stroller, know that there is an option that allows you to have both in one, the Sit N Stoll car seat stroller, which is FAA approved. However, I've seen some of those up close and personal, and I doubt that this seat would fit in a standard coach seat, so do your homework and make sure it will fit everywhere before splurging for one.

The passport

The passport deserves a section of its own because of the quirks of getting a passport for a little one. You see, you can't just order a passport by mail, the way you can for yourself. The government will refuse to process your child's passport application unless they are confident that you are not planning on kidnapping your child, so you have to apply in person, with your child, and provide proof that the other parent is ok with you getting the passport... This easiest is to make the passport application a family affair, and all go together to the post office or government office to file your application. Barring this, you need a notarized letter from your spouse agreeing to the passport application, or papers showing that you have sole custody. Knowing that ahead of time will save you a lot of delays - again a hard-earned lesson on my part.

While you're at it, if you travel alone with your child or children, get a notarized letter from the other parent certifying that they know and approve of you taking the child on this trip. You most likely won't need it, but having this document with me has avoided some less-than-pleasant interactions with zealous and paranoid immigration officers of various nationalities.

The carry-on

When traveling with a small child, which type of carry-on to choose is important. After trying different versions, my recommendation is a backpack - you'll be glad you chose that when you have to bodily carry a squirming pre-schooler under one arm, while guiding the stroller with your remaining hand. A specialized diaper backpack is of course an option, but any good, slightly oversize backpack to which you add a changing pad and an insulated pouch works very well. Just make sure your backpack fits airlines carry-on size requirements, the airlines are getting stricter and stricter about it. You don't want to find yourself having to check your carry-on in!

When filling your carry-on, take about twice what you think you will need. In other words, if you think you'll need 2 diapers, take 4. If you think you'll need formula for 4 bottles, take enough for 8, etc.

Make sure to include in your carry-on one, if possible two, full changes of clothes per child, and one for you. I wish I had followed this piece of advice the day my son threw up 15 minutes before boarding, and soiled both his and my clothes. I had a full change of clothes for him, but no extra pants for me, so I had to endure a slight yet uncomfortable whiff for the whole 8-hour flight (fortunately it wasn't perceptible ahead or behind me).

Also include in the carry-on everything you think you'd need if your child fell ill: thermometer, nose pump, pain killer, fever reducer, antihistamine, etc. Depending where you go, it might be harder to get, more expensive, or simply hard to get on short notice. Besides, should your child develop an earache in the plane, you'll be ready.

Finally, make sure to have plenty of of your child(ren)'s favorite snacks, some of their favorite toys and a few new toys they've never seen. Always having old and new toys and favorite snacks to give to my son is part of what made passengers comment on how well-behaved, calm and quiet my son was throughout the flights.

When he was younger (circa 2005-2007), we also frequently took a DVD player and a Leapster to occupy an extra few hours. Nowadays, most transatlantic planes have individual entertainment systems, so you may not need to take any of those, but it doesn't hurt to make sure that your plane has individual on-board entertainment. When your child is an infant, a Boppy-style pillow may be something you want to take. It's your choice, and a question of personal comfort, but I've always found that taking a sling or infant carrier on board allowed me to comfortably install my baby for sleep, and took a lot less space.

Once on location

Once you are at your destination, your small child will need two things: a place to sleep and a chair adapted to his or her size. Your hotel or friends and family may have equipment, but there is no guarantee that it'll be as safe and sturdy as the one you're used to. I personally never counted on finding either after my first trip, where I found myself with an inadequate crib and no high chair at all in restaurants.

One of the bed options is to take a pack 'n play with you. This works as long as you don't need to carry all your luggage yourself. I once had to negotiate an airport arrival on my own, and there is no way I would have been able to do it successfully had I had to carry a pack 'n play on top of the luggage, the carry-on, the stoller and my very active then-15-month old. Besides, the airlines usually consider a pack 'n play to be oversize luggage and charge for it as such. Having a kid-sized inflatable mattress with fitted sleeping bag offered a lot more flexibility and less bulk. When my boy was 8 months old, the sleeping bag kept him securely in bed, and the fabric let him breathe even if he had his face against it. As he grew, he loved having his own bed with him no matter where he went. No need to get him used to a new sleeping arrangement. this being said, if you want your little one confined when you sleep, and unable to just climb into your bed, the pack 'n play may be your preferred solution.

The high chair is something we usually don't think about - and an item I didn't think of bringing with me the first time I traveled to Europe with my son. To my sorrow, I discovered that restaurants there are in general much less child-friendly than American ones, i.e. they often don't have high chairs at all. Upon my return to the US, I immediately bought an on-the-go self-inflatable booster and blessed whoever invented it for the following 3 years. It takes almost no place in a suitcase, is easy to carry around, and makes you completely independent of what a restaurant, or a friend's home, has or doesn't have. As long as they have chairs with backs, you are set.

In conclusion - keeping your child happy during the flight

The best preparation in the world won't make the flight easy if your child keeps crying through the flight...

Like most people, I hate it when I have to endure the constant crying or shouting of a young child in a plane, so when my turn came to travel with a small child myself, I did everything in my power to keep my son entertained and calm. I succeeded so well that until my son was 5 - at which time it apparently seems to become a given that a child will behave in a plane -, at the end of every flight passengers commented on how my son was calm and well-behaved during the flight.

The way I did this was by catering to his needs throughout the flight, no matter what they were. It was intense work during the flight, and I sometimes needed a nap once we arrived at our destination, but it was well worth it. The snacks, old and new toys were part of what kept him entertained. I also made the plane a no-food-rule zone, so that he would look forward to it, because then he could eat anything he wanted - as long as he stayed quiet. Presenting the toys one by one bought me calm time throughout the flight. When he wanted to walk (and he wanted to walk non-stop from 11 months old until he was 3), I would ask the flight attendant for the least disruptive place to do so, and then he would burn some energy there.

My son is now 8, and doesn't require nearly as much attention as he used to. I can now read or even sleep, while he keeps himself entertained in the plane. But to this day I still travel with a couple of cheap new toys, and more than once have helped distraught parents calm a baby or toddler down and shared my strategies with them - helped by my son who seems to remember all the tricks that worked.

Are Baby Walkers Safe to Use?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, baby walkers aren't safe for a baby's use. In fact, they all encourage parents to throw their infant walkers away! Such a waste, if you must say. Good for you if you have not bought any one of these for your kid. But if you already did, these statistics might alarm you:

Chicco Baby Strollers

Fact #1: Around 14,000 children were injured due to baby walkers annually.

Chicco Baby Strollers

Fact #2: Since 1973, 34 children have already died because of baby walkers.

Baby walkers are deemed unsafe because it gives children too much mobility than they need. The wheels in the baby walker get them to dangerous spots around the house faster than you can stop them. This is especially true if you have stairs or steps in your home. Worse, baby walkers can cause drowning if you kid strayed too far away from you and towards the outdoor pool.

Also, pinch injuries can be initiated by infant walkers. It's easy for the toes and the fingers of the baby to catch onto something. In a baby walker, kids sit in an upright position. That gives them the ability to reach on to objects, which in turn, could fall on them and hurt them.

But then, all of these accidents and injuries can be prevented. First, you have to childproof your home. This means that anything that could harm your baby should be kept away from him. Buy childproofing devices and install them around the house to keep your baby safe. These are all required regardless if your child is using a baby walker or not.

Secondly, don't treat the infant walker as your child's baby sitter. Parents tend to leave their kids unattended in the baby walker. This is dangerous practice. Even if your child seems to be playing happily alone in the walker, that's not an excuse for you to watch TV or do some other chores. Keep your eyes glued to the kid all the time. If you can't do that, better take your child from the walker and put him in the crib where he's safer.

Shades of Fun and Play: Fun Games for Kids While Under the Beach Umbrella

Sunlight contains Vit. D, a nutrient that aids in the absorption of calcium in the body which is essential for building strong bones and teeth and normal skeletal bone formation. But there is such thing as too much sun, especially when it comes to young children. As a rule, do not allow a child to undergo sun exposure between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. On a beach, make sure the child has enough shade, such as an umbrella or a shed. If he falls asleep on a chair or stroller, make sure he is sufficiently covered. But as the child grows and changes his napping schedule, time spent in the shade can be translated to hours of fun.

Chicco Baby Strollers

A castle for a little king (or queen)
Little boys and girls will have their own kingdom to rule with castles especially built for their size. Sand castles allow lots of physical and imaginative play - digging holes, building tunnels, constructing a fortress. Give them the right tools for the job - sifts, shovels, buckets and moulds and then let their imagination take over with endless choices of raw materials - sand, seashells, algae, wood, stones, twigs and leaves.

Chicco Baby Strollers

Mostly mosaic
Another wonderful game for kids is mosaic construction. Mosaics allow the use of free-forming shapes. By putting them together, kids learn to compose and create. Use round, rectangular, oval, irregular and every silly shape you can find and have the kids create something based on a theme. Let kids create a fish shape, a flower or a boat using rocks and found objects on the sand. Go horizontal or let the kids build a standing sculpture for parents and beachgoers to enjoy. Look for small, smooth rocks to ensure that tiny hands are not grazed and choose them in several colors. If there are shells around, let the children use those too. Or better yet, go on a beachcombing adventure first and let the child use whatever materials he can find.

Gimme shelter
Need more shade? Let the children help build one. But not just any shade - make sure it is something that comes out of the child's fantastical mind. Does he want to become an astronaut? Build a spaceship. Does he like a little adventure outdoors? Build a tepee. Gather a few beach towels, a few wooden or plastic pegs and some trusty shovels for digging in the sand. Some strings will also come in handy for tying the towels together. If there is need for some technical help, let daddy or mommy take charge; otherwise, it's the child's call.
